Freeway Rick Ross to be in court against rapper Rick Ross again

by EJah on Apr.12, 2011, under Artists, Hip Hop Politics, News

Freeway Rick Ross the ex-gangsta drug lord who did his time and has recently tried to sue Rick Ross in Federal court regarding the use of his name.  The Feds didn’t like the fact that he got his name from illegal activities and threw his case out.  Now Freeway is going to to sue the Boss in California state court with a new team of lawyers, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP.  Apparently Freeway’s new lawyers feel they have a great chance on the state level because they’re suing Def Jam, Rick Ross and threatened to sue the new label he signed with, Warner Brothers, if they put out any new music.  Props to Freeway for not taking it to the streets, because I’m sure he still has some friends that wouldn’t be so diplomatic with Rick Ross in the streets.

Nicki Minaj to open for Britney

by EJah on Apr.12, 2011, under Artists, Events, News

Britney Spears just signed Nicki Minaj to open for her tour that kicks off this summer.  Spears needed a new act to tour with her for the latest album effort Femme Fatale (and Britney sure has been Fatale in the past few years) after Enrique Iglesias pulled out soon after the announcement was made.  Per TMZ the two came to an agreement and Britney plans to make an official announcement today (April 12th, 2011) about her tour plans.  Good move Britney sign the contract then make the announcement.  At first I was thinking that the two music styles would clash, but then again, two fine young pop tarts touring together.  One with all kinds of problems that she seems to have gotten a hold of and another rising star who seems to be keeping it together.  Hmmm maybe Nicky can teach Britney how to not let her life fall apart while being famous.  Then again, maybe Britney will show Nicky how to take a dive and make a comeback.  Either way some good news for us to write about.  Britney’s tours kicks off on June 17th in Sacramento California.

Da Brat making a comeback

by EJah on Mar.28, 2011, under Artists, Hip Hop, News

Da Brat being behind bars for the last 2 years for aggravated assault is free and now looking towards a comeback.  I surebratt hope for the sake of female rappers that she can make a comeback.  Her last effort in 2003 Limelight, Luv and Niteclubs, was very bland and her rap style sounded played.  She said while in jail she wasn’t motivate to write rhymes but did write some memoirs of her troubled childhood.  She said she has two and a half years of bullsh!t to talk about and she’s ready to get into the studio.  She has her good points and her bad points about her comeback.  Good point is that she has Jermaine Dupri backing her still, bad point is the Nicki Minaj syndrome.  People nowadays aren’t looking for skilled rappers but more like some plastic Lil Wayne wannabe.  Who knows, I hope she can come off hot and be a good edition to the female rappers out there, who are few.

DJ Megatron shot near Staten Island home

by EJah on Mar.28, 2011, under Artists, Hip Hop Politics, News

Dj MegatronDJ Megatr0n was shot dead near his home in Staten Island around 2am on Monday March 28th.  One shot to the torso of the 32 year old man from 106th and park fame.  Police have no witnesses, motive or any type of clue as to why he was shot.  Hope we don’t have another Biggie/Tupac fiasco where the killer is never found.  As sad and cynical as the song by KRS 1 is, “If you wanna get away with murder, kill a rapper,” there rings some truth to that.  Peace to Megatron, Corey McGriff, and his family.  His mother giving statements to the news was rightfully distraught.

Nicki Minaj breaks Billboard record

by EJah on Mar.06, 2011, under Artists, Hip Hop, News

Nicki MinajNicki Minaj is breaking records, 14 consecutive weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard to 200 albums for Pink Friday. Congratulations to Black FridayNicki, that is amazing, mainly because I don’t think she raps that great, but I have to give her props though for being in the top 10 for so long. After going back and forth with Lil Kim regarding who’s the best rapper and hot many albums Kim sold on the internet. Seems like Nicki is winning the battle in that category but you should see album cover on Lil Kim’s album with Kim beheading Ms Minaj.

M1 talks about upcoming Dead Prez album

by EJah on Mar.06, 2011, under Artists, Hip Hop, Hip Hop Politics, Music

Just when Hip Hop is getting sad and depressing here comes come good old fashion realness.  Hip Hop lately has been plagued with falseness.  False breasts, rhymes, battles, rumors, record sales or whatever else is going on.  M1 is coming out with a new album soon, it’s been a while since we heard anything from from them.  2009′s Pulse of the People album was OK, but not great, but we’re used to getting great music from them.  From the sound of the first single played during the video, looks good for them!  Information Age by Dead Prez coming soon….

MC Rhymefest to run for office in Chicago

by EJah on Feb.28, 2011, under Artists, Hip Hop Politics, News

RhymefestABC News reports that Rapper Rhymefest is trying to run for Chicago City council.  He seems very serious and passionate about running for office.  Besides a youthful following in Chicago, he also has the support of the Chicago Teachers Union.  Problem is he has a criminal record and that may hamper his running for office.  Also if he may not get elected if he keeps sticking his tongue out at press conferences. He says he wants to make Chicago a better, safer place to stay.  Yeah I hear what he’s talking about because Chicago has so many murders, I moved there for better opportunities as far as work and moved back to NYC to be safer.  But on the real though, no one really cares because a lot of people outside of Chicago don’t even know who Rhymefest is.  We at HipHope.com wish him the best of luck….

Tired of your kids watching foul videos and listening to foul music…

by EJah on Feb.22, 2011, under Artists, Hip Hop, Music, Strickly For Kids

I know most of the music videos on BET and MTV are foul, full of half naked people dancing and visuals of people doing things I don’t want my kids doing. I really don’t want my two year old dancing and gyrating to music that talks about having sex and living a life of crime. On the other hand most of the music made for kids will actually make you wanna choke at the quality of what’s being put out there. But for the most part, PBS has been doing its thing. Most artists have been making videos for Sesame Street, Electric Company and other shows. With good music and real artists making them. Here are a few examples then you can check the sites. Artists entertaining as well as teaching…..

Wycleff with the Electric City Slide

Queen Latifah teaches about the letter O

REM with Happy Monsters

Sean Kingston, Two Ways to Say C

Neyo Transformer H

Electric Company kids doing the Slide and Drop.

Hip Hop is not a music category it’s a cuture!!!!!

by EJah on Feb.21, 2011, under Artists, Hip Hop, Music

People have forgotten about Hip Hop as being an art and not just a money making apparatus.  When Hip Hop first started there was only two turntables, break beats, MC’s, dancers and the crowd.  Many have forgotten the art of DJing and break dancing.  Well the Cut Cafe internet broadcast features live DJs on the wheels of steel (and of course the virtual wheels of steel).  The broadcasts are live so you have to listen at certain times, but it always seems to be on and you can peep older shows.

There’s a wide variety of DJs on this station and most of the time they’re hot.  You’ll hear scratch DJs, mix DJs, prop Djs and more, listed below is the schedule…..

Hip Hop is MCing, DJing, Dancing, Artwork, Knowledge, Skills, Staying Fresh to Death and Original.  Let’s get back to the ART FORM and not the material……

Kool G Rap Teaching Rap

by EJah on May.15, 2010, under Artists, Hip Hop, Hip Hop Politics, Music

Kool G Rap is now teaching rapping, he released a book entitled, How To Rap: The Art And Science Of The Hip Hop MC.  Sounds like a great idea and no better person to teach than him.  Back from the early 80′s through the 90′s

Kool G Rap blazed the mic and was listened from West Coast, Down South and East Coast back when the coast wars were going on. Check the video for his song On The Run was considered a classic in the art of story telling.  HipHopDx.com has an extensive interview with him on their website.  It’s informative and long, you may have to come back to read theKool G Rap whole thing.  So this could set a trend and get Hip Hop taught in school since it’s part of our culture more than anything.  Listen to the lyrics in this track, it’s wonderful MCing (wow, I just made a new Hip Hop phrase, Wonderful MCing!)  I love it in this video when he says, “Wake up stupid we gotta go!”  Check it, let me know what you think….

Bone Thugs N Harmony-Uni5: The Worlds Enemy May 4th, 2010

by EJah on May.04, 2010, under Artists, Review

The last Bone Thugs N Harmony album was back in 2007, T.H.U.G.S., the album was decent at best.  Not their best Bone Thugs N Harmonywork.  But each Layzie Bone put out a very nice solo joint, Thugz Nation, in 2008.  So here we are in 2010 and the Thugs have a new album Uni5: The Worlds Enemy.  On this album you can no doubt hear Bone’s musical maturity.  Beats are hard and what would the Bone Thugs be without the Harmony.  As they rap hardcore and harmonize on the tracks they flow lovely together.  But you can hear the beats have more musical instruments than you’re used to with Bone from back in the day.  Nice!  Guest appearances from J. Rush, Ricco Barrino and K Young.  I guess with the Bone brothers you don’t need a whole lot of Guests to make a hot album.  Stand out tracks Rebirth, Wanna Be, Everytime and Facts Don’t Lie.  Pretty good album as a whole, we’re going to give the album 84% out a 100.  Check the preview below….
